Hi Everyone! We're moving into the final stretch of Pod-Together 2020 and we hope everyone has been having a wonderful time! A few announcements:

Pod-Together BIPOC Character Love Subcollection

We've created a subcollection on AO3 for Pod-Together projects featuring BIPOC characters!

This subcollection comes from continued discussions within the Pod_Together Discord, including podficcers of color, and among the mods about how to boost and celebrate works about BIPOC characters and encourage more of them within the bounds of our challenge. We know that the larger context of fandom is that stories about BIPOC characters often get overlooked in favor of stories about white characters. In affirming our commitment to stories about characters of color, our hope is that the existence of this subcollection gives participants support in thinking intentionally about BIPOC representation within their stories, gives BIPOC readers and listeners greater access to stories with characters that look like them, and allows the stories that do have this representation to have an extra spotlight and receive extra love and attention!

This new subcollection is located here.

The subcollection is opt-in, so if you feel that your project belongs, go ahead and add your work! Here are some guidelines to help you decide:
- Includes at least one BIPOC major character
- Was created with the characters' cultural identities in mind

Pod-Together projects from this year AND from all previous years are welcome and encouraged to join the collection.

To add a previously posted work to the collection:
1. Go to your work and choose "Edit"
2. Scroll down to the "Associations" section
3. Type Pod-Together BIPOC Representation into the "Post to Collections/Challenges" box.
4. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click "Post"

(Any projects added to the BIPOC Character Love subcollection still remain in the subcollection for the year of Pod-Together it was created in. This subcollection is an additional location to find your work, not moving your project from one place to another.)

Reminder of Important Dates

- The podfic deadline is this Sunday, August 23rd. There is no timezone cut-off, so as long as it's still the 23rd anywhere in the world, you're all-set!

- If you need an extension, you must also request that extension by the 23rd. For more information on extensions, see the rules post (it's the third item down in "Basic Rules")

- After that, it's one of the most exciting parts of Pod-Together: Posting! The posting schedule will go up by Tuesday the 25th, and your projects will be revealed from August 27th through September 5th, with about 5 projects posted each day.

- Party Favors are due September 5th and will all be revealed on September 6th. For more info on Party Favors, check out the FAQ. Party Favors are submitted the same way as regular projects by adding them to the 2020 Collection (see the posting instructions)

P.S. The inaugural Chromatic Characters Podfic Anthology is open and is encouraging of Pod-Together style projects. So if you loved the collaboration of Pod-Together, maybe grab a partner and create something for the anthology!

Projects must be posted to AO3 by the Podfic Submission Deadline on Sunday August 23rd. If the written component is already completed, feel free to post the text to AO3 now and edit the podfic in later.

Post your work in the Pod Together 2020 Collection, either by following this link, or by listing Pod_Together2020 in the “Post to Collections/Challenges” field.

Be sure to hit “Post” when done; the challenge is set to unrevealed, so the project will show as a "Mystery Work" to anyone but the co-authors and mods. If you leave the project as a draft, the mods will not be able to view it to confirm it meets word count and that the podfic links are working, and the project will automatically delete itself after a month.

Also make sure to add all your group members as co-authors, since the podfic and text will be in the same post, so all creators need editing access and credit for their work!

PODFIC-SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS

When the podfic is completed, it should be included in the same post as the text, at the top of the post. The only exception is audio-only posts, where the text is of course not required. If you'd like additional support with how to post a podfic to AO3, here is a guide that may be helpful.

Your podfic must be available for listening in both streaming and mp3 download formats. A streaming player directly on the AO3 post is highly recommended, but not required. If you need some help with hosting options or with streaming, you can check out this post or ask for support on the Pod_Together Discord!

After reading discussions over the past week about racism in fandom and the harm in letting racist fanworks go unmoderated, we have workshopped some rules to reduce racist content in pod-together.

These rules will serve as a guidepost for participants as they create their collaborations, and may also motivate them to reach out to a beta reader or sensitivity reader if they are unsure whether their work falls within the rules. During the challenge, we will help signal boost any searches for beta readers or sensitivity readers.

Our plan is that once pod-together projects are revealed, we will have a system where anyone can anonymously report to us a work that they believe is in violation of one of these rules. If we receive a report about a work being in violation, we will follow up as described in rule 3.

This is the first year we have included content moderation in pod-together and we are open to continued feedback about the wording of these rules and about our process for enforcing them. If you have any concerns or suggestions, please reach out to us at pod.together@gmail.com.

2020 Content Rules:

1. No using the real-life tragedies of BIPOC as a backdrop for stories that center characters who are white. This includes centering white characters in an AU of an oppressive situation that happened to BIPOC, such as a slavery AU.

1a. Similarly, no using real-life tragedies of other marginalized groups to center characters that are not members of those groups. This includes centering members outside that group in an AU of an oppressive situation that happened to that group, such as a Holocaust AU.

2. Don’t use negative stereotypes as a way to demonize or discard BIPOC characters in favor of white characters. (example: for Kirk/Spock fic, making Uhura an angry black woman to justify Spock's relationship with Kirk). This post may be helpful.

3. If anyone flags an untagged racist trope or racist language in a story, the mod team will check for accuracy (with outside consultation as needed). If a racist trope or language is confirmed, the creators will be required to tag for that content unless they revise the fanwork to no longer include that content.

3a. Other oppressive tropes or language (sexist, ableist, homophobic, etc) can also be flagged to mods and will have the same follow-up steps as above.

Content Moderation Rules Reporting Form:

Pod-Together works that do not meet the content rules as described above can be reported to the mods through this google form.

Reports can be anonymous or you can provide your contact information so we can reach out to you if we have questions. We will look into every issue that is reported to us. There is no need for multiple people to coordinate reporting the same issue, unless they have additional information to add, as a single report will be treated with the same weight as multiple identical reports.

Recommended Resources:

This section will be updated periodically as the mods locate or participants suggest resources that can assist in creating antiracist fanworks. Please feel free to comment with additional suggestions.

1. Writing with Color - A tumblr focused on writing and resources centered around racial diversity. Contains Q&A-style advice, writing guides, etc.

2. White Light, Black Magic: Racism in Esoteric Thought (pdf) - Resource about the racist history of the terms black or dark and white or light when describing magic. Relevant quote: "Wherever we find ourselves using the term "white" to mean positive, socially acceptable and sacred, and black as undesirable, ugly and evil, this is a flag to re-examine our thinking and recast our terminology." This is very long, so you may or may not read it all, but check out at least the first page and the section called "Inclusive Esoteric Language" that starts on page 48.

3. Writing the Other - A small collection of resources for creating inclusive fiction. The site includes resources for many identities and has a collection specifically for writing characters of different races and ethnicities.

4. Marvel Fans 4 BLM Resource Page - Marvel Fans 4 BLM is a fanworks auction in support of Black Lives Matter causes. This page is their curated collection of resources, including links to information specifically focused on writing Black characters.

5. Writing the Margins from the Center and Other Moral Geometries - An article by writer Amal El-Mohtar about how to approach writing marginalized characters. This is less of a practical guide than some of the other linked resources, and more of a jumping off point for introspective thinking.

6. The E-Racing of The Hunger Games: Race & Cultures in Fiction - An article by Hiromi Goto on racial vagueness in The Hunger Games, and methods to indicate race in fiction besides simply descriptions of skin color.

Pod-Together 2020 sign-ups will stay open for an additional week, now closing on Saturday June 13th. All the other dates from the challenge will also be pushed back a week, and these changes have been reflected in an update to the timeline in the Rules.

We’ve made this decision because of the ongoing protests against police brutality in the United States. We want to step back and not draw focus away from this vital activist effort. In addition, beginning a new project in times of high stress can feel overwhelming, and we don’t want to be an additional source of anxiety for participants.

A week from now isn’t very far in the future, and we know there will still be ongoing protests, actions, stress, and uncertainty, but fandom is a space many of us use to support our mental health. Particularly in the wake of COVID-19 and the way it uprooted lives, we feel it is important to participant well-being that we provide a predictable schedule.

We also want to honor the important anti-racism work being done in the world right now and to move intentionally towards anti-racism within our own selves (as white mods) and the Pod-Together community. We will be actively reflecting on this ourselves throughout this coming round of Pod-Together through reading and discussion of anti-racist literature, and we are also open to input—you can reach us at pod.together@gmail.com.

Hi everyone,

We’re thrilled to hear from so many groups at check-in that writing is going well so far. For some groups, writing is nearly finished! We mods have been talking together about a way to celebrate early finishing, and we’ve decided to implement an optional early writing submission deadline this year, which will be August 1st. Like the early podfic submission deadline, the early writing submission deadline will be the Wednesday before the normal deadline (which is on a Sunday). And, like the early podfic submission deadline, the early writing submission deadline will help the project have an earlier posting date. Here’s how posting order will work this year:

  1. projects that met the early writing AND early podfic submission deadlines

  2. projects that met the early writing OR early podfic submission deadlines*

  3. all other projects

We know this twist is coming a bit late in the game, and we want to be clear that it’s totally fine to NOT shoot for the early deadline. If it feels exciting and motivating to aim for that date, go for it! If it feels stressful, feel free to ignore it entirely. The number one most important thing is that you and your partner have an enjoyable collaborative experience.

Please let us know if you have any questions. If not, we look forward to hearing from you at the next check-in!

Best,
Mods

Hi everyone!

We've been getting some questions about how to submit podfics, so here's a quick checklist of steps to follow:

If you are using our hosting:
  • Email us your mp3 file and any other file you'd like us to host, including m4b and/or cover art

  • Add a streaming option to your AO3 entry. You can get code for embedded streaming here or here.

  • Add a direct download option to your AO3 entry. Remember, all downloads must be available directly from AO3 (no clicking through to a different site).

  • Send us an email to let us know that your podfic has been added to your entry. We'll double-check it and email you back to tell you whether everything looks good from our end. If not, we'll talk you through fixing any final issues we notice.

If you are using your own hosting:
  • Add a streaming option to your AO3 entry. You can get code for embedded streaming here or here.

  • Add a direct download option to your AO3 entry. Remember, all downloads must be available directly from AO3 (no clicking through to a different site).

  • Send us an email to let us know that your podfic has been added to your entry. We'll double-check it and email you back to tell you whether everything looks good from our end. If not, we'll talk you through fixing any final issues we notice.

As a reminder, the early submission deadline is August 9th, and all podfics are due August 13th. If you are unable to submit by August 13th, please contact us to get an extension, and let us know the length of extension (up to 7 days) that you need. Extension requests must be made on or before August 13th.

I believe that's everything, but if you think of any remaining questions, feel free to ask them in the comments here.

Hi!

Our first round of check-ins has revealed two participants who need pinch hit partners:

Writer needed in Star Wars VII, Marvel Comics, Sleepy Hollow, Pacific Rim, Rosewood, The Wicked + The Divine, Hamilton, Lucifer, or Limitless. This should be someone who is comfortable drafting pretty independently after initial conversations with the podficcer. (Pinch Hit Found!)

Podficcer needed in Star Wars VII (Finn/Poe and/or Rey) or MCU (Bucky/Sam or Bucky/Nat). This should be someone who is interested in a high level of interaction and collaboration during both the writing and podficcing parts of the challenge. (Pinch Hit Found!)

Please let us know if you are interested, and pass this along to anyone who you think might be interested. We’re hoping to find both of these participants new partners ASAP, since the writing deadline is three weeks away!

Thank you to our pinch hitters for the quick response!

Here's the posting schedule. The mods will reveal the work on AO3, so all participants might want to do on that day is update the posting date on their work, so it'll show up on fandom RSS feeds. Unfortunately AO3 won't let you list a posting date in the future, so you'll have to manually change it on the day you want it to show on the RSS.

Please be sure to have your work ready for your reveal day, with the podfic links and streaming in the body of the work (streaming doesn't work elsewhere). Mods will reveal on AO3 and crosspost to this comm on DW, LJ, and Tumblr, with podfics crossposted to the Audiofic Archive if participants agreed when asked. Once the project is live, you're free to crosspost wherever else you'd like.

Reminder #1: Party Favors are due August 28, and will be posted August 29.
Reminder #2: To those participants with extensions, please remember that your due date is our agreed upon extension date, not anytime before your posting date. However, if you would like to turn in a postable draft at your deadline and then update it between then and your posting date, you may.

Schedule )

Please let me know if there are any problems with the schedule; posting starts tomorrow!
Also, please make sure I have the writer(s)/podficcer(s) done correctly.

Hello!

Many of you are in the final stages of your projects, and so we thought it would be a good time to put up our yearly post to help people who want to work on Party Favors find each other. In case you've never done a Party Favor before, here's what you need to know:

-There is no word minimum
-There's no official commitment involved—mods usually don't even know a Party Favor is being planned until it's turned in!
-The deadline is Friday, August 28th
-Party Favors are a revealed on Saturday, August 29th

If you are interested in creating a Party Favor but don't have a partner in mind, feel free to leave a comment here and the mods will help spread the word. If you see anybody looking for a partner here, just respond to them directly and you're good to go!
