I got my first spam comment on ao3! Is it weird that I'm a little bit excited about that? I know they're probably just targeting popular fandom tags but it makes me feel like I'm doing something right.

Screenshot of an Ao3 comment email. The text reads 'ceriterde1 (Registered User) left the following comment on bad decisions: Your story and characters attracted me towards you. I had no problem managing them. I like to create it. Are you able to purchase my artwork? Discord: [the discord username is crossed out'.

Weirdest part is that it came from a registered user. I tried to make a report, but it was already deleted by the time I had a chance to read the email, and I think someone else might have already reported the account? Hopefully the Policy & Abuse team is able to sort it out.

I had two things shipping to my parents house. One that was supposed to be shipped back on the 30th but was telling me it should have arrived monday and one that should have shipped by the 3rd that wasn't supposed to arrive until tomorrow. Both arrived today. Woot. I bought my coveted raven dress from Svaha when they had everything 40% off and I had preordered the husk and angel figures in Loser Baby blue in the summer. Wow, Bandai really hit it out of the park with these two (especially compared to the stuff I got from Youtooz). Now to find a place to put them.

Made it back to Ohio (nearly forgot my apartment key!) half the crap is in the house, half is still in the car. It was a good drive. Rocket is between my feet on the recliner, happy as hell I'm back (mad as hell that I forgot to leave behind 1 can of food for him and only have kibble, he's mad as hell and I hear about it every time I move)

Given how iced over my freezer is, my power must have been out for a long time. Probably throwing all of that stuff out. sigh.

What I Just Finished Reading:

Keeping the Secret - Mostly the tales of the WAVS in Dayton OH in the ladies' own words

Murder Made Her Wicked - loved this historical mystery set in Wellesley

What I am Currently Reading:

The Witching Hour - by Heather Graham. how is this series so successful? This is not my first in the series (which I forgot when I requested this arc) this is not good.

Murder in the Ranks - Set in WWII with the WAACs in North Africa. Really different. I've read other WWII mysteries but never one with the lady in the war zone. I'm very much enjoying this one

What I Plan to Read Next: La Grand Familia and Zombie Day Care

Challenge #4: Rec The Contents Of Your Last Page

Any website that you like, be it fanfiction, art, social media, or something a bit more eccentric!

Gonna give y'all a mix of fannish and non-fannish stuff.

Firstly, my non-fandom interest the past few years has been North Carolina folklore. And several months ago, I stumbled across The Broadside podcast from WUNC (which is one of NPR's local affiliates in North Carolina). The podcast isn't folklore-specific, but it shares a variety of interesting stories about North Carolina, ranging from venus flytrap preservation efforts to exploration of Black banjo players and everything weird and wonderful in between. (Sometimes it does touch on folklore too). Episodes are usually around 20-25 minutes long. (I like to listen while I'm cooking!)

Secondly, I looked through my open tabs and here are a bunch of exchange collections on ao3 that I'm still in the slow process of reading through. It's really never too late to read a fic (or appreciate fan art or listen to a podfic, etc). I'm sure the authors would appreciate more people enjoying their work!

Exchanges:
Whump Exchange 2025
Casefic Exchange 2025
Fic in a Box 2025
Crossworks 2025
Trick or Treat 2025
Star Trek Holidays 2025
Yuletide 2025

Happy reading and/or listening!

She stepped onto the stage, wide-eyed and white knuckled around the gathered black plastic bag in her hands, and tentatively shuffled into the sizzle of the spotlight. Applause burst out from the audience, visible only around the very edges of the light as shadowy wings and horns, at the sight of her in her moth-eaten sweater and her coziest slippers. When she had stepped through her apartment door to take out the trash, she had expected to enter a hallway, rather than an elaborately dressed stage in mid-production somewhere in the fae realms, and she had no idea what to expect when she made it all the way to stage right.

Mom and I went to the casino to lose money and I did that well. Mom won. We also hit Primanti's and I got a second rubber ducky in my duck juice cocktail so yay for that.

I am not ready for work for reasons I don't want to get into publicly and has everything to do with the changes Ohio's Republicans have made with education.

(I checked and I've tagged "basketball" in only 6 fics so far. That feels so low) (...4 of them were bnha 😂)

[community profile] snowflake_challenge 2026, challenge 3- write a love letter to fandom.

a love letter to k-pop and the k-pop rpf community
I don't think I'd be the person I am today if I hadn't found k-pop. I remember watching a Teens React episode at my uncle's old house back in 2018 where they reacted to BLACKPINK's music. I used to be really into react content back in the day and would watch anything. When I watched the video, I thought the group's music sounded interesting and added them to my playlist along with some other recommended songs I thought sounded good. I appreciated the music but didn't really think about the people behind it.

It wasn't until a random day in 2021 when I watching sapphic ship edits, that I stumbled across videos about kpop girl group "gay" moments and others shipping two group members together. I knew the concept of shipping idols, even saw a copious amount Jennie/Lisa fanfiction on Wattpad when I was first getting into BLACKPINK, but at that time, I still felt weird about RPF and slightly uncomfortable with how much smut I saw, so I didn't engage with it. However, these video introduced me to groups like Red Velvet, Mamamoo, and TWICE and I learned about the members through their questionable, for a lack of a better word, interactions with each other.

From then on, I started following more groups and appreciating the faces behind the voices, finding out just how lovable so many of them are. I fell in love with what I saw. The close interactions, the laughs, the drama, the vulnerability, the trust, all of it. I also learned to embrace RPF for what it is and see the fun in it. I started writing and engaging with the community of k-pop writers and readers. I wrote my longest fic to date, and overall started feeling more confident in my abilities.

Many people still demonize RPF, and I get it. I used to the in the same boat. Now, I just look past posts like that, because I know I can't do anything to change people's minds about it when they're made up. Instead, I make company with the people who do understand it, who engage with it.

I'm grateful for my corner of the k-pop fan community. I'm glad we're all able to participate in good faith jokes and shipping, while also being able to separate fiction from reality. A giant thank you to all the great groups for creating concepts and music that we fans can bond over as well. It's a gift that I'm thankful is being shared with us.

I'm so glad to be a part of this fandom! Thank you for being so welcoming.

And it was a long weird one for me. Couldn't sleep until after 3 AM only to have someone call the house at 7 AM (non emergency, OMG) and then my cousins were out here from 11-1. One lives not that far from here but the other was up from NC with his girlfriend.

It was actually a nice visit. Afterward that, it was warm enough to melt the ice and Mom and I escaped the hill. Managed to get to Macy's, picked up a last act shirt and blue jeans (all for under 34$ yay), some St. Germaine's liquor to add to my cocktail collection (am contemplating tossing the bottles all over the place back home, maybe the landlord will think it's such a mess because I drink too much) and then on to homegoods to get a new frying pan and whatever other trouble I could find (this time its name was pfeffernusse, and no I'm not sorry)

Almost blacked out at what the Chinese restaurant had jacked their prices too (we had an old menu)

I didn't get much writing done but I did finish the last of my planned [community profile] fandomtrees stories. Now to see if there is anything I can do in the many zero or 1 gift trees.

And it's music monday 30 weeks of music. This week's prompt is #8 a song from your first concert. I am ashamed to say I can't even remember which WAS my first concert. I think it was this. If not it was very close to being the first.

Challenge #3

Write a love letter to fandom. It might be to fandom in general, to a particular fandom, favourite character, anything at all.

So this was a tough one to decide what to write. But I just finished Kamen Rider Amazon yesterday, and have been thinking about how he should be friends with Hoeru from No. 1 Sentai Gozyuger and Blazar from Ultraman Blazar because they actually share quite a few commonalities, despite being so different. (The biggest one is their tendency to howl 😂 a good example of Blazar howling is here from 0:39 to 0:48)

This will probably make no sense to anyone who hasn't seen these shows, and it ended up incredibly cheesy and heartfelt when I originally just wanted to write something funny. But that's fine because I wanted to write more meta this year (this counts, right?) and I had fun writing it anyway!

Therefore, I present:

An ode to weird guys who howl (and also feel out of place)

This is the time of year when many will fall victim to predatory prognosticators, claiming to have the ability to foretell your fate in 2026. We recommend only consulting officially licensed prophets, seers, and fortunetellers, whose respective governing bodies monitor accuracy, timeliness, and ethical methodology. And remember, anyone who claims the future is both knowable and unchangeable has clearly never encountered even a basic temporal anomaly, so how much can they really know about the world around us?

[personal profile] autobotscoutriella
Snowflake Challenge: A mug of coffee or hot chocolate with a snowflake shaped gingerbread cookie perched on the rim sits nestled amidst a softly bunched blanket. A few dried orange slices sit next to it.

Challenge #2: Pets of Fandom
Loosely defined! Post about your pets, pets from your canon, anything you want!

It's like this prompt was made for me! All of my cats for the last couple decades have been named after robots. Here's the current two:

This is Mirage, named after the Transformers character. She thinks her name is Memes, because that's what her nickname morphed into over a couple of months. She's very sweet, very shy, and got her name by vanishing into a pile of stuffed animals so well I sat next to her for twenty minutes and didn't realize she was there.

And this is Springs, named after Springer from Transformers. Her shelter name was Pogo; when the staff asked if I'd be changing it, I said probably, all of my cats are named after robots, so while I was filling out paperwork they were looking up Transformers to name her after, and that's who we picked. It's fitting; she can go from floor to the top of the cat tree in one bounce. My one single surviving houseplant may have to come to work with me.

As for pets in canon, there's a few to choose from. Transformers canon has Thundercracker's dog Buster, and I'm fond of Apollo Justice's dubiously canonical cat Mikeko from some of the Ace Attorney extras (someday I'll write the Klavdarpollo accidental kitten acquisition fic). But I think my favorite mostly-canonical cat is Meowgatron.

Writerly Ways

[personal profile] trobadora is hosting write every day this month and posed a question to which several of us answered yes we remember to write every day and then asked how do we remember? Last night I had no real answer to that. I'm not sure I do today either.

Once upon a time Deepka Chopra was offering 21 day meditations for free with the idea that psychologists say if you do anything for 21 days it becomes a habit. I'm not sure where he read/invented that. I can tell you it didn't make me keep up my meditation once the 21 days were over for the most part so it might be hokum.

But the truth is I don't remember setting out to write every day but I have done so for so long HOW I managed to make it a habit is lost in my Dorrie the fish memory. I will say I'm NOT a believer in you MUST write every day but it certainly helps to have SOME kind of writing practice. I do know waiting for the mood or your muse isn't really going to get you anywhere.

But for some every day is too much pressure and not necessarily helpful. Some of us have difficult jobs, maybe more than one, we have partners, we have kids, we have chronic illness. Hell I'm always shocked by the people who can write with young kids. We need to be kind to ourselves or we risk damaging our creative self. Some of us can't work if we're anxious. Others (me!) write and write to make the anxiety calm.

And that's my biggest piece of advice for establishing a writing habit. Find what suits you. Some of you will be morning writers ew as far as working for me. I had one friend who was converted by that how to write book back in the later 80s early 90s that talked about morning papers and insisted that was the ONLY way to do it. Nope, there is no ONLY way. Some of you will need a dedicated quiet space. Others can write anywhere. Some might need to go out somewhere else because all the stuff at home is distracting.

Find what works for you and do that. And then do it again. Do it as often as you're comfortable with. If it helps you, set a deadline (which is one of the reasons I write every day. I'm very often on a very real deadline). Have a friend set a deadline for you if that helps. Basically you do you and keep on doing it. You may falter but that's okay. Dust yourself off and go for it again.

scrubjayspeaks: hand holding pen over notebook (done this week)
[personal profile] scrubjayspeaks
Well, it took until Monday before I started feeling even remotely human again. And it wasn’t until Thursday that I started feeling like I could do much by way of activities. It’s disappointing, though I suppose I didn’t have much planned for my vacation that needed high physical activity. It’s just that I had hoped to rest in a way that involved being conscious slightly more often. Also, it meant mum was left doing all the work. I don’t feel guilty, because it wasn’t my fault, but I do feel upset.

I tried out the vacuum sealer I got second-hand from work. Neither of us was feeling in the mood to plow through the massive quantity of yule log cake we had left. So I sliced it up, lightly froze it for stability, and then vacuum sealed it into sets of two or three slices. It seems to have worked great. And now I have emergency cake rations in the freezer!

We had another couple of storms roll through. Solid rain, though not as apocalyptic as I expected or as other places got. The weeds are at least knee high, but it’s never dry enough to mow or weed whack, so, uh, guess we just live in a jungle now...

Lewisia: 6 new pieces written (all caught up), January posts queued

Day job: none hours

Cooking: vacuum sealed yule log slices

Cleaning: hauled the tree out of the house

Crafting: bought some more stickers (shoutout to KeyMonster) and turned them into magnets again, made a little more progress on attaching patches

Gardening: started making a shortlist of seeds to buy

Reading: Strangers in Paradise XXV #1 & #2 (oh no, you mean all the other series are connected too??? I am never going to be done reading Terry Moore, am I?), We Need Your Art by Amie McNee (I liked it, I think, it’s a bit different from the usual advice, which I appreciate), also, I’m reading each day’s passage from John Darnielle’s This Year: 365 Songs Annotated

Watching: out of a desperate desire to actually set aside time to watch things I want to see, I have resorted to creating a Pacemaker plan for watching shows, adulthood is hell...

Listening: a clutch of Louie Zong albums--Oneiric Ocean (sounds like lost tracks from the E.V.O. game soundtrack), Spyglass (more of the fun collage stuff he does), and Rain in the Valley (just beautiful)

Playing: started dabbling with Moonlighter--oh, I’m so bad at real-time combat, but I will make an attempt

Clock Mouse: 583 words through the end of the year, switched to doing planning work--30 minutes

Other: purged three email inboxes with extreme prejudice (╬▔皿▔)╯
