Check-In #2

Jul. 5th, 2014 10:51 am
paraka: A baby wearing headphones and holding a mic (Default)
[personal profile] paraka
Tomorrow is our second check-in, but posting early worked well last check-in, so we're doing it again! While you're welcome to wait until tomorrow, feel free to make your check-in early. You can check in over email, tumblr, twitter, LJ, or DW--whichever feels most comfortable to you.

The complete writing is due in just over a week, on July 13th. If you're not feeling confident in your ability to finish the writing within the next 7 days, please let us know and we can:

-Talk about extensions (link to FAQ).
-The possibility of getting a beta or cheerleader
-The possibility of getting a cowriter
-The possibility of (with your partner's approval) leaving some areas of the script for podficcer ad-lib
-The option of daily accountability check-ins, if that will help keep you motivated and not stressed!

Also, please remember to share what you've written so far with your partner. The minimum requirement is once per check-in!

Finally, if you're realizing that what you really need in order to take care of yourself is to drop out, that's fine. Yay self-care! Please let us know as soon as possible, though, so we can offer your partner a pinch hitter.

Comments are screened.

Tomorrow is our first check-in, but we’re so excited we’re setting up the post a bit early! If you’re excited, too, feel free to make your check-in early. You can check in over email, tumblr, twitter, LJ, or DW--whichever feels most comfortable to you.

Now is also a good time to touch base with your partner(s). Remember that sharing your work-in-progress with your partner(s) is mandatory, and that the minimum requirement is once per check-in. That means that, if you haven't already shared what you have so far, now is the time to do so. Partners, don’t forget to give feedback/encouragement on the work-in-progress when you see it!

Completed writing is due in 3 weeks, on July 13th. When you check in this weekend, let us know if you feel on track for that deadline so far. We'd also love to know what's going well in your group and any worries you may have about your group or your project. Comments on LJ/DW are screened, and Asks on tumblr will not be published.

It's very early in the game, so if you are anticipating difficulty, this would be a great time to start discussing problem-solving options. We're extremely committed to making sure all participants have as positive an experience as possible! And if everything’s going awesome, YAY, we can’t wait to hear all about it!

Today's questions focus on fanworks you've already made and will help partners become more familiar with each others' work.

  1. Share a piece of a fanwork you're particularly proud of (a page or so of a written work, a few minutes of an audio work) and explain why you're proud of it.

  2. Read/listen to your partner's shared fanwork, and give feedback about what works for you about it.

This is our last icebreaker. We hope that groups have found them informative and helpful! Remember, the first check in is on June 22nd but, as always, you're welcome to contact the mods at any time for any reason.

Today's questions dig a little deeper into what makes group work work or not work for each person, and then goes on to begin (or continue!) the conversation about options for collaboration on each part of your project.

  1. Tell your partner about a good and a bad group work experience you've had, either in fandom or at school or work (or other). What made the good one good? What made the bad one bad? What did you learn about yourself and what makes group work successful for you?

  2. Suggest ways that the podficcer might be involved in the writing process that would work well for you.

  3. Suggest ways that the writer might be involved in the podficcing process that would work well for you.

[personal profile] klb
Today's ice breaker questions are about how you view your fanworks and how you and your partner(s) can mesh those ideas.

  1. Why do you create fanworks? What does it mean to you?

  2. What are some ideas you have for how this collaboration could be specifically created for voice? (You can see this post for some possibilities to start with)

  3. What wishes and expectations do you have in how your fanwork is treated? If you have a blanket statement/dear author letter/other policy, you may want to link your partner to it and discuss it. If you don't have one, you may decide to create one, perhaps through discussion with your partner. More info about these types of statements can be found at these links: Pondering Transformative Works, Blanket Permission, and Transformation in General by [personal profile] fire_juggler, you can see numerous examples of permission statements on Fanlore and here's a post about Dear Writer Letters.

[personal profile] paraka
Day 2's icebreaker questions are related to group work!

  1. What strengths you will bring to the group?

  2. What may make you difficult to work with? (And, if you want, how can your partner help you with these difficulties?)

  3. Have you ever collaborated on a fanwork with someone before? If so, describe what it was like, which things worked for you, which things didn't work as well. What do you expect from this collaboration?

  4. What level of communication and feedback do you want/need from this partnership? What are some ways/tools you can use to achieve this (ie. scheduled contact, using google docs/drop box to share WIPs)?*

  5. If you unknowingly said something or suggested something for the project that made your partner uncomfortable, how would you want them to address you about it (or would you rather not know)?

*Every year, there is one partnership where someone has a difficult experience because their partner doesn't acknowledge/feedback their part of the project. We highly encourage having a conversation about your feedback needs from your partner(s) now, so that this can be the first year where this issue doesn't arise!

Hello lovely participants,

It's been amazing to watch everyone's excitement as you meet your groups and begin discussing your project! Icebreaker week is designed to support that process, with a combination of fun and helpful getting-to-know-you questions. They started some incredibly useful and productive conversations with my group last year, and I hope they'll do the same for you!

These exercises are optional, but we hope they'll help both those groups that were assigned and the ones that formed on their own. We encourage group members to contact each other, answering as many questions as as they are comfortable with.

Today's questions are geared towards helping group members learn a bit more about each other, personally and fannishly.

  1. If you could be any fannish character for a day, who would it be any why?

  2. Name as many books, movies, TV shows, animes, comics, celebrities, etc. that you can think of that you have felt or feel fannish about.

  3. List 5 things you enjoy in stories (e.g. a kind of trope, story line, sexual kink, etc.). List 5 things that you do not enjoy in stories.

  4. Other than the things you were matched together on, find 2 things you have in common.

  5. If you could have any super power, what would it be and why?

  6. If you were stuck on a deserted island what 3 fanworks would you want with you?

  7. What are 3 fun/unknown/interesting/etc. things about yourself (fannish or otherwise)?

Spring is finally arriving for your mods in the northern hemisphere, so that means it's time to start prepping for this year's challenge!

Here's the timeline for this year's challenge:

Individual Sign Ups Open: May 24
Group Sign Ups Open: May 31
All Sign Ups Close: June 7
Assignments for Individual Sign Ups Go Out: June 8
Ice Breaker Week: June 9-13
Check In #1: June 22
Check In #2: July 6
Written Component Due: July 13
Check In #3: July 27
Deadline for Early Podfic Submission: August 3
All Podfics Due: August 6
Posting Starts: August 9

We've opened sign ups a little bit earlier than last year, to allow podficcers a few extra days and to help ensure posting wraps up a bit earlier in the year.

We've also added a "soft" deadline for projects, which we'll explain in more detail when we post the revised rules. But basically, if you get your project in by that deadline, your project will have an earlier posting date.

Is everyone as excited and ready to go as your mods!?

P.S. If you want a chance to warm up, [community profile] pt_lightning (like a mini Pod Together round) is running in May and currently open for sign ups.

This pod-together project is a first collaboration between Paraka and me, as a result of a Twitter conversation where one of us wanted to do poems and the other something French. So here we go with 5 French and English poems about some of our favourite female characters. Since we're both bilingual, so's our project - take note that while both Engish and French versions are alike, they aren't direct translations of each other. I hope you'll enjoy our work.
